We believe in complete transparency when it comes to freight costs. Here is how shipping charges — including any fuel surcharges — work at The Herbal Connection.
How Freight is Calculated
Freight is calculated in real time at checkout based on the weight and cubic dimensions of your order. We pass courier charges through to you at cost — no markup, no handling fees, nothing added by us.
The freight amount you see at checkout is exactly what the courier charges us for your shipment.
What is a Fuel Surcharge?
Fuel surcharges are fees applied by courier and freight carriers to offset fluctuating fuel costs. They are a standard industry practice and are set entirely by the carrier — not by The Herbal Connection.
Fuel surcharges are not applied by us. They are included in the freight rate that the carrier calculates for your shipment and are therefore already reflected in the freight total shown at checkout.
Why Does My Freight Cost Change Between Orders?
Freight costs can vary between orders for several reasons:
- Order weight and cubic size — couriers charge based on whichever is greater: dead weight or cubic (volumetric) weight. A fluffy product like dried lavender costs more to ship than a dense product like turmeric powder at the same weight.
- Carrier rate changes — couriers periodically adjust their base rates and surcharges.
- Fuel surcharge fluctuations — carrier fuel surcharges move with fuel prices and are updated regularly by the carrier.
- Destination — rates vary by delivery zone and remoteness.
Can I Reduce My Freight Cost?
Yes — the most effective way to reduce freight as a proportion of your order is to consolidate orders. Ordering more products in a single shipment is almost always more cost-effective than multiple smaller orders. Consider:
- Consolidating your regular orders into fewer, larger shipments
- Planning ahead to avoid urgent re-orders that may require express freight
- Reviewing our volume discount tiers — larger orders attract up to 15% off product pricing, which can offset freight costs
Additional Freight Charges
In rare cases where the actual freight cost is significantly higher than estimated at checkout (for example, due to a large or unusually bulky order), we reserve the right to contact you to request additional freight payment. In this situation, you will always have the option to either pay the adjusted freight or receive a full refund of your order.
